Fame and Loneliness
Experimental Typography
This is a series of newspaper typography designed to tribute to the famous musician: Michael Jackson. For this project, I designed several typefaces inspired by some of the adjectives used to describe him and quotes from MJ's interviews: loneliest, smooth, perfectionist, and rhythmic. The typeface in the center of the first page consists of thousands of people, which contrasts with the content of the quote and shows the loneliness of this legend. The typeface on the second page shows the smoothness of MJ's moonwalk by using dust floating above the moon in the universe. On the third page, the font of "Perfectionist" shows the fragility of his personality in the flowing bubbles. Even though he was a perfectionist, he was so vulnerable to the overwhelming negative public opinion. On the last page, I designed each letter of "Rhythm" in conjunction with a view of nature, inspired by one of MJ's famous quotes: "Everything has a rhythm."

For the cover page, there is the headline of the newspaper: Fame & Loneliness, which is composed of millions of diamonds to convey the supreme reputation of MJ. The typeface of the word "loneliest" in the center is inspired by MJ's quote:" I believe I'm one of the loneliest people in the world." I used images of the crowd, which can be millions of fans who're waiting in line to watch his performance to contrast with the content of the quote and show the loneliness of this legend.
On the second and third pages, the theme is "Smoothness", which represents MJ's smooth and engaging dance moonwalk. To express the feeling of smoothness, I used flour to lettering this word(as image Process 1 shown in reference images) to mimic the rock and powder of the moon floating in the universe.
On the fourth and fifth pages, the theme is "Perfectionist", which comes from MJ's quote:" I'm never satisfied with anything cause I do believe deeply in perfection." I used flowing bubbles to express the fragility of his personality. He obtained incredible achievements in his field and looked perfect, but he was so vulnerable to overwhelmingly negative public opinion. Same as a bubble, give way at once.
On the last page, I designed each letter of "Rhythm" separately in conjunction with a view of nature, inspired by one of MJ's famous quotes: "Everything living has a rhythm." Such as streams, rivers, lakes, oceans, and forests, MJ left his music and voice spreading around the world, no matter whether he is alive or not.
